Course aims to provide professionals and others working in the field of accessible housing an insight into equipment, design and adaptation issues for the plus-size (bariatric) user group, so they can work more effectively and confidently in this area.

Description

On completion of the course, delegates will:

  • Be able to discuss key issues relating to plus-size (bariatric) users, including functional, psychological and access related.
  • Be familiar with a range of companies in the UK providing specialist equipment for this user group and understand the pros, cons and uses of bed and seating equipment in particular.
  • Understand the risks to both carers and users in terms of moving and handling and how to assess and reduce these risks, including issues relating to means of escape.
  • Be familiar with the main housing challenges affecting plus-size users and have explored possible solutions to these e.g. issues relating to floor loadings, door widening, lift access and personal hygiene.
  • Have increased proficiency in assessing the space requirements of individual plus-size users and in planning layouts of key areas such as bathrooms.
  • Have discussed a range of cases relating to plus-size users and worked through potential approaches and solutions within a group setting.
